Like maybe 30' of coiled rope in the idiots hand? the guys ahead of him also had the same thing and they all made a habit of traveling on the glacier like this. I stayed far enough behind usually so that if they fell they wouldn't take me too. luckily it was a traverse so they'd fall to my left and not on me.
